History
On March 20, Costa Rica commemorates the Battle of Santa Rosa, which took place in 1856, when Costa Rican forces defeated the filibuster army led by William Walker. This event marked the beginning of the National Campaign of 1856–1857, a crucial effort to defend the sovereignty and freedom of Costa Rica and Central America.
The battle occurred at Hacienda Santa Rosa, located in Guanacaste. Under the command of President Juan Rafael Mora Porras, Costa Rican troops achieved a rapid and decisive victory within minutes, expelling the filibusters from national territory.
